Frame Challenges Positively

People with a fixed mindset perceive difficult tasks as a sign that they’re not cut out for that activity. Can you provide context and framing that helps battle that way of thinking? For example:

This is a really hard thing to do, so don’t worry if you can’t do it at first.

Most people need to try this many times before they can do it.

This is a really challenging goal, so we’re going to tackle it in small pieces.

If people do fail, offer encouragement. Suggest they try again later, offer ideas for approaching the task differently, and remind them that change takes time. You may also be able to reframe success; perhaps users didn’t achieve one goal, but did make progress on a different one. Point it out.

If people succeed, congratulate them! But be careful to give praise that supports a growth mindset and not a fixed one. Saying something like “You’re a beast!” implies that success was due to something about the person—exactly what a fixed mindset believes. Consider instead reinforcement like “Your hard work paid off!” or even a simple “You did it!”
